The world won’t stop for you

“The world’s a stage and most of us are desperately unrehearsed.” Sean O’Casey

First update since February, this doesn’t bodes well for my little online diary…. In any case, since the last post, an awful lot has happened some great things, others not so great, but so is life.

To save some money, I decided to move out of my previous flat and into a share flat with a friend – that move alone is saving me up to 600 pounds a month, which is fantastic. But moving has a high price, that if not a monetary one, it’s a price of time. Settling in the new place took forever and there are still a lot of things to be sorted out of the piles and put on their definitive places, but for some reason this takes a lot longer than one would expect.

When I was not worrying myself about organising the flat, I spent my time listening, seeing and doing a  lot of cool stuff.

This last two months I’ve been lucky to se Jezabels, Sting and L’Arc en Ciel  playing live. Jezabels and L’Arc en Ciel were mind-blowing. Sting was good, not fantastic, there were a lot of the Police songs that I would have liked to listen him singing, but unfortunately, the focus was on his solo career. It was a solid gig though.

I also had plenty of opportunity to go to the theatre and managed to see “The Houdini Experience” which was a live magic performance with Hans Klok. It’s fun to see how circus brings my inner child out, as I stay there amazed at the magic tricks or faberglast with the man on the rope.

I’ve also saw Noel Coward’s  ”Hay Fever”, “Bingo” starring Patrick Stewart as Shakespeare, “Happy New”, “The Duchess of Malfi” which I had to go back home and wiki to understand what I’ve seen, “The King’s speech” which is a delightful drama / comedy, “Long Journey into night” with stelar performances from all cast.

To feed my anime hunger, I’ve attended Minamicon and Kitacon, as well as cosplayed a Zombie in a tuxedo for a High School of the Dead photoshoot. All of these have been fantastic.

I’ve also attended a couple friends wedding in Sheffield, basically because I’ve never been to a wedding in here before as well as attended a NLP Training.

On the work side of things, I’ve spent a lot of time working on the website of a short film called Open about a Leukaemia survivor ( www.openshortfilm.com ) as well as spent quite some time organising our Anime convention in Cambridge ( www.thecamcon.com ).

And since last week, I’m spending a lot of time and energy to understand the world of 3D printers, as the time seems to be right to work in this field as it has so many applications and it’s such a fascinating world to be discovered!

As for goal reaching – I’ve put off a stone already, so two more to go on the dieting plan. I’m back to the gym, although not in full throttle just yet. Working on the short film website is my entry door to the world of film making, where I wish to learn as much as I can before trying to make my own film.

This is the end of the report for now.

The one-month mark

“If you end up with a boring miserable life because you listened to your mom, your dad, your teacher, your priest, or some guy on television telling you how to do your shit, then you deserve it.” ― Frank Zappa

So, one month has gone since the start of this diary and how are things progressing so far? Here’s a little progress report. Out of all the goals I’ve set for myself, I’ve decided to focus on the following to get started.

  • Get my driver’s license
  • Get fit
  • Make a living out of the corporate world
  • Quit smoking ( as pointed by Julio)

Last Tuesday I did the practical driving test after two lessons, which unfortunately, was not enough. The Examiner was a guy named Charles in the Barnett DSA testing centre. According to my driving instructor, he has the reputation of being the strictest examiner in the centre. In honesty, his speech pattern felt quite unsettling, as it sounded mechanical and unsympathetic, like an answer machine. After a while in the car with him, I felt very uncomfortable and at some point anxiety started to build up.

He marked me 9 faults, 3 of them being major faults – Steering; Reverse Parking & Following distance. The Steering mark was due to my changing gears while turning corners. One should change gears before start turning and keep the hands on the wheels at all time, while turning. The reverse parking mark, was because I didn’t looked around enough and relied mostly on the mirrors. The following distance, was basically because I was following the other cars too closely. None of these were things I didn’t really knew, but in short, they were caused by a mix of overconfidence and anxiety, which is possibly the cause for most experienced drivers to fail the test in England, when they decide they want a british license.

I’ve got the practice exam re-scheduled in the same exam centre as unfortunately, they were the only centre which had exam slots before June. Better luck next time for  me, I guess.

The getting fit part seems to be on track so far. Going to the gym twice a week since I’ve rejoined, which after the second week has already enhanced my energy levels, as well as an increased sense of well-being which is all the more reason to keep going and increase the load slowly, but surely. The diet part wasn’t going so great, so I enlisted a little help. I’ve got two weeks of Diet Chef as a test, which I just started today. The food that they deliver is surprisingly good, although it is quite early to say anything of it just yet.

Living outside the corporate world might prove trickier than I anticipated, but still there’s no profit without any risk. I’ve set myself a deadline to get one of my ideas out in the market, that will run up at the end of this month. The building side of it is running not so smoothly as I wanted, mainly due to my own procrastination. So to keep on track with my own schedule, I need to finish the website within the next one and a half week, which considering that I also have to prepare to move out from my current flat, could mean that I won’t make it in time.

On the other hand, adding a flat hunt and moving out to a new place have ran a lot smoother than anticipated. I managed to a really nice, large and central place in Earl’s Court after looking at less than 10 properties. Having the money to pay for a considerable amount of rent in advance, I’ve also managed to negotiate an 8% discount on the asking price, with all things considered, has been quite good. So, I’m really looking forward to move to the new place now!

And to finish this post, on the 7th, I’ve been to a hypnosis quit smoking session with Quitmasters UK and have been struggling with it since. The cravings still exist, but they fell bearable. To increase the chances of success, I’m also back on Champix. I’d like to say that it’s been going well, but unfortunately, I’ve relapsed a few of the days since my proclaimed last day of smoking.

The first month is the most difficult part, but with a lot of will power and some chemical help, I’m sure this will be the time I quit smoking for good.

If you want to make your dreams come true, then the first step is action!

This post title is a little quote from Fairy Tail I’ve came across this week and it reflects exactly how I feel about this year’s challenge I proposed to myself.

So, to get things started, since the last post I’ve set some things into motion. I’ve booked the theory exam, crammed like crazy on Monday and passed the theory test on Tuesday. But the earliest I could book the practice test was a month later. Now, to be able to tick one of the things in my list I need to take the lessons and pass the exam. Shouldn’t be too difficult.

The rest of the week after the first post and taking the theory exam was spend trying to sort my VISA situation, going back and forth to the lawyer with docs, then realising they needed to be signed and stamped. Although this sound like quite a simple task, this was absurdly time consuming.

Then I visited my virtual office in Brentford, just to deliver some documents to setup the company there, which was mainly uneventful. Once that was sorted, I’ve created profiles in three freelance websites (oDesk, PeoplePerHour & eLance). To begin with, I’ll start with all of them, but I’m likely to focus on one of two of them.

Last week, I also managed to setup a developer environment for me and started brushing up my web skills, which haven’t been used for at least 5 years now. Once I got started, most things came back to me naturally, setting up MAMP was quite more complicated than originally though, but it was good practice.

I also started going to the gym last week and two sessions into it, I’m still feeling completely spent, even though my last session was on Monday. Muscle pain from exercise is quite a let down, but luckily I know that as I keep on going it will go away.

And, to finish all off, I’ve booked a couple guitar classes out of a Groupon voucher I’ve got, discussed moving into a share house with some friends and sorted a self-storage to put all my stuff while I can’t move it all to the new place. The way things are going, I’ll keep busy for quite a while….

And it begins….

Officially my last contract ended today, but in practical terms it ended Friday. And now, I find myself with loads of time in my hand, a million things I’d like to do, some of them ordinary, others extra-ordinary, and I’ll try to achieve as many of them as possible during this year.

For anyone reading this, some flashback might also occur…. Specially on the travel bit, as I’ve been to some places already, and it might be interesting to write about them after all this time.

To get started, here’s a list of all things I’d like to do, in no particular order:

  1. Learn french
  2. Learn japanese
  3. Get my driver’s license
  4. Get my glider’s pilot license
  5. Get a commercial pilot license
  6. Write a children book
  7. Write a full-fledged novel
  8. Direct a film
  9. Learn to play the guitar
  10. Write, compose and record an album
  11. Travel to as many countries in the world as possible
  12. Go to Space
  13. Get a masters degree
  14. Get a Doctorate degree
  15. Get fit
  16. Learn some magic tricks
  17. Learn to juggle
  18. Make a living out of the corporate world
  19. Update my PHP and Java skills
  20. Quit smoking (suggestion from Julio)

Some of these things are easy, others require some time, money or skill, but none of these are impossible. So let the journey begin!
